June 2008

Salams MSAers! I pray this e-mail finds everyone enjoying the summer break, or at least benefiting from summer classes / internships.

While classes may have ended, the MSA National officers have kept busy.  The WZ Canada and EZ Canada Zonal Conferences were huge successes, benefiting hundreds of students and community members.  I had the opportunity to present at the ISNA Majlis Ash-Shura meeting, as well as attend a dinner honoring the contributions of Former Undersectretary Karen Hughes.  I also had the pleasure of meeting with the Ambassador of Australia, Imam W.D. Mohamed, Andre Carson and other Muslim leaders to discuss the challenges facing the Muslim community.

Alhamduillah, this past month you voted in the MSA National officers for the 2008-2009 school year.  The Executive Committee for the coming year is:

President: Asma Mirza
Ex-officio: Mohamed Sheibani
VP USA: Randa Kuziez
VP Canada: Zainab Khan
Treasurer: Danish Adil
EZ USA Rep: Tauqeer Zaidi
CZ USA Rep: Nura Sediqe
WZ USA Rep: Yasmin El-Hady
EZ Can Rep: Kareem Mirza
WZ Can Rep: Samir Hassan

Insha'Allah this week the new Executive Committee will meet for two days to plan for the coming year.  I look forward to working with this dedicated, talented individuals to continue serving our fellow Muslim students.

Next week, over July 4th weekend, we will be holding two conferences.  MSA National is excited to co-sponsor the YM portion of the annual ICNA convention in Hartford, CT.  Insha'Allah myself and the new East Zone Rep USA, Br. Toquir, will be attending and are excited to meet fellow MSA members.  The same weekend, the MSA South Central Conference, held parallel to the ISNA Regional Conference will be held in Houston, TX.  Masha'Allah the local committee and the MSA Lone Star Council have been working extremely hard to plan the conference with a unique program that focuses on management and leadership training

Of course the summer will culminate with the biggest conference of the year - the annual Continental Conference, held parallel to the Annual ISNA Convention, in Columbus, Ohio.  We've already begun working on the program to incorporate new ideas to make the most of this amazing gathering only a few days before Ramadan.

I pray we all make the most of this summer and plan for the year ahead!

Wassalams!

Take Your Project Downtown to Another Level!

Salam MSAers!

I hope everyone is keeping hydrated on these hot summer days! Its great to know despite hot weather Project Downtown chapters across North America are still meeting with their friends' downtown. Consistency is the key and Alhamdulilah with dedicated MSAers like you homelessness will one day be a thing of the past!

The Community Service Task Force is currently trying to update their lists of PD chapters and need your help! Please keep in touch with your PD liaison, send us pictures, videos, progress updates, when your PD meets and where, etc., and we will add it to the national site. Please email contact@projectdowntown.org

Some PDs have inquired about different ways of taking your PD to the next level. Below are a few tips we hope can help in doing so.

-Play board games or group sports

-Bring in job applications and help the homeless fill them out.

-Conduct a career workshop.

-Bring in clothes

-Create hygiene kits

Jazak Allah Khair for all the hard work and dedication!
