October 2008
Salams
MSAers and belated Eid Mubarak! I pray everyone had a successful Fast-A-Thon
and a wonderful Eid!
Alhamdulilah,
its been a blessed few weeks. This past month I attended the ISNA Majlis
Meeting. I also had the honor of speaking at the Muslim Women of Maryland
(MWM) event on becoming "Your Best You", an innovative program that brought
together Muslim Women from across the DC / Maryland area. This past weekend your
Central Zone Rep Sr. Nura worked with MSAs in Indiana
to hold an MSA Midwest Conference, held parallel to the ISNA Midwest Conference
in Indianapolis, Indiana. Alhamduillah, MSAers from
across the state came to learn from the speakers and network with others.
West Zone USA held the first PATH
program that featured two COMPASS trainers. Hosted by MSA West, the
program featured interactive workshops on topics such as Gender Relations and
Working with the Media. The next PATH program will insha'Allah be held in
East Zone Canada
in Toronto.
To learn more about this program, please contact your Zonal Rep!
Speaking
of MSA events, this past Thursday the "Key Lessons for MSA Workers" series held
its October call on Voting and Civic Participation in the Prophetic
Tradition. With the Canadian elections last week and the US Presidential
elections only a few weeks away, the topic was very relevant. Check out
the MSA website for information about the November call!
As
we head into November, the MSA National Get Out the Vote Coalition (GOTV) will
go into full swing. Students from across the country will work to Rock
the Muslim Vote and encourage their communities to learn about the candidates
and vote! To participate, please e-mail Sr. Asma at patfchair@msanational.org .
I
pray everyone had success on their midterms and hope everyone in the US
votes on November 4th ! Wassalams!

of fasting 6 days during this month, and by the time the e-letter actually is
released, you'll have just enough time insh'Allah ;) I am
extremely excited about the MSA National and MSA West joint PATH training and
Delegates meeting at UCLA on the 18th of October. Insh'Allah different
campuses across our zone can think about possibly holding such a
training on their campus. Applications for all those interested in joing the

MSA National Participates in Malaria No More Event
|
MSA
National accepted an invitation by the Tony Blair Faith
Foundation in partnership with Malaria No More to a Los Angeles event held on Thursday,
September 25, 2008. The LA event marked the midway point the United
Nations has set for acheiving the Millenium Development Goals (MDG's). A
panel was held during the event which included the former British Prime
Minister Tony Blair, Sheikh Hamza Yusuf from the Zaytuna Institute, and
Saleemah Abdul-Ghafur from Malaria No More.
MSA
National Vice President Randa Kuziez was selected from the audience to ask a
question of the panelists. Her question centered around asking about
whether political instability was at the heart of the inability to eradicate
preventable diseases like malaria throughout the world, which claims the lives
of over a million people each year. Her question was answered by both
Tony Blair and Hamza Yusuf and provided an excellent platform for
panelists to discuss their differing views on what can be done to curb systemic
problems in countries where malaria is rampant. Tony Blair commented that
in the continent of Africa specifically, the long-term solutions must come from
within Africa itslef, but that distributing
bednets to poor families to protect children now would help save lives in the
meantime. Sheikh Hamza Yusuf responded by implicating human greed at the
core of most of the problems facing countries devestated by malaira and noted
that cultivating land and further development would be the best way to curb the
disease in the long range as malaria is primarily a disease of
poverty.
Both MSA
National Vice President Randa Kuziez and MSA National West Zone USA
Respresentative Yasmin Elhady were invited to participate in the intimate
100-person audience, while thousands of internet users logged in to watch the
live streaming video.
