From the President's Desktop By Asma Mirza December 2008
Salams
MSAers! I pray everyone had a wonderful Eid and is having a wonderful winter break!
Before I
begin this month's President's Desktop, I'd like to ask you to join me in
praying for those suffering in Gaza. On December 29th MSA National and
other Muslim organizations held a press conference calling for an end to the
violence. Today, December 31st
MSA National joined other organizations in a vigil in Washington, DC
calling for peace. We ask that you pray
for the safety of all those affected as well as contact your Congressmen and
Senators to ask for an end to the violence.
Alhamdulilah,
December has been a busy month for MSAers.
On behalf of MSA National, I joined other Muslims organizations in a
board meeting for the American Muslim Taskforce (AMT) to discuss ways to work
with the incoming administration and plan for a civil rights conference in
February.
MSA
National was also invited to attend a farewell lunch for the Secretary of
Homeland Security Michael Chertoff. Over
the past several years MSA National has worked with the Department of Homeland
Security (DHS) to voice the concerns of Muslim Students while working to find
solutions to protect both the United
States and our civil rights. We wish Secretary Chertoff success in his
next endeavors and look forward to continue working with the DHS.
Over
Thanksgiving break I had the honor of speaking at the annual Muslim Alliance of
North America (MANA) conference held in Philadelphia,
PA. It was wonderful to hear scholars and
community activists discuss what the agenda for Muslims in North
America should be and how to attain our communal goals.
Speaking of
conferences, this month MSA National worked with ISNA and MYNA to plan the
program for the 46th Annual Continental Conference, held parallel to
the annual ISNA Convention. This year
due to Ramadan the conference is moving to July 4th weekend and will
be held in Washington, DC.
Alhamduillah, the early stages of the program looks great!
Before the
Continental Conference, Insha'Allah we'll be holding the annual MSA National
Zonal Conferences! I'm excited to
announce that we've selected Philadelphia
to host the annual East Zone Conference!
Alhamduillah, there were several competitive proposals to host the
conference and we thank everyone for their hard work. The East Zone Zonal Conference will
insha'Allah be April 10-12th; more details will be posted on the
East Zone website soon! Check out our
website in the next few weeks for more on the other zonal conferences!
Speaking of
MSA events, two weeks ago the "Key Lessons for MSA Workers" series held its
November call on Maintaining the Spirit of Activism with Imam Siraj
Wahhaj. Check out the MSA website for information
about the January call!
The Media
and Communications Task Force (MCTF) was also very active this past month as
they prepare for the next edition of the MSA Link, coming to a zonal conference
near you insha'Allah! With two
successful PATH programs this semester, COMPASS is holding a training meeting
in January to improve the program as well as plan the next several PATH
programs. If you'd like to hold a
management training program customized for the MSA context on your campus,
please e-mail compass@msanational.org
or contact your zonal rep!
As we head
into January, the MSA National officers are preparing for their midterm meeting
while finalizing the Spring 2009 MSA National Zonal Conferences. I also encourage MSA Boards and Shura members
to take the opportunity of winter break to not only plan for the coming
semester, but to use the blessings of free time to increase our worship and
study of Islam. Insha'Allah this will
give us even more motivation to serve our campus community in the spring and
help us in our ultimate goal of reaching Heaven.
I pray
everyone enjoys winter break!
Wassalams!

MSA National Condemns Recent Attacks on Gaza
|
12/29/08 - MSA National Condemns Recent Attacks on Gaza
MSA NATIONAL CONDEMNS RECENT ATTACKS ON GAZA (Washington
DC, 12/29/08) The Muslim Students Association of the United States and
Canada (MSA National) calls on
its members and chapters to join us in condemning the recent air strikes in the
Gaza strip. We ask you to write your
congressmen and senators, and urge them to call for an end to the violence.
The fifty year struggle for land, civility, and most
importantly peace, has taken a sour turn this weekend with the largest act of
violence in the Israeli - Palestinian conflict.
In an unbalanced and inhumane attack, Israel has dropped over 300
bombs destroying homes, business and infrastructure. An already derelict Gaza has been coping with
an illegal blockade that has stifled supplies such as food, medicine, and oil
into the region. The culmination of
these events can only be regarded as appalling and inhumane, and as such needs
to be condemned.
The conflict in the Middle East is perhaps one of the most significant
events plaguing the globe and it affects all of us directly or indirectly in so
many ways. It is important for us as
Muslims to do all that we can to defend those who cannot defend themselves, and
here in America we have the diplomatic means to do so. Act quickly - for these people do not have
the luxury of time.
MSA National, with
over 200 affiliated chapters in the United States and Canada, was
established in 1963. MSA National's goals are to empower Muslim
students through educational programs, provide management training for
local chapters, and serve as a broad platform for students of all
backgrounds. For more information on the program, please visit: www.msanational.org -END- CONTACT: Ms. Asma Rehman, MSA National Political Action Task Force Chair, 703-820-7900
Email: patfchair@msanational.org. ------------------------------ ------------------------------------- The

includes a special focus on students and issues of concern to them
during their college career.
