10/06/07 - Passing of an MSA Pioneer: Dr. Ba-yunus

Assalamu Alaykum,

It is with a heavy heart we inform you that Dr. Illyas Ba-Yunus, one of the first Presidents of MSA National, passed away this morning. Inna lillahi wa inna lillahi rajeun. From God we come and to Him we return.

Dr Ba-Yunus was one of the early pioneers of MSA in the 60's. He served as President of MSA National from 1968-1969, President of AMSS from 1975-1976 and President of ISNA from 1983-1985.

He was a professor of Sociology at SUNY Cortland prior to retirement. One of the oft quoted statistics about divorce rates amongst Muslims in North America comes from an early study done by Dr Ba-Yunus. His son, Asad Ba-Yunus, was also active with MSA National and served as Vice President in the late 90's.

We ask that you keep him and his family in your du'ah during these blessed days of Ramadan.

Waalaykum Massalam,

The MSA National Executive Committee
