01/26/08 - MSA National Calls for an End to the Seige on Gaza
MSA National joins humanitarian organizations Oxfam, Amnesty International, and the UN among others around the world in praying for the peaceful resolution of the situation in Gaza. We urge the United States and Canada to continue to push for a quick resolution to avoid a full-scale humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The UN reports that roughly half of all households in Gaza have access to running water for only one or two hours a day, and the area's waste water system is only partially functioning, resulting in the dumping of 30 million liters of untreated sewage into the Mediterranean Sea each day. Director of UN relief operations in Gaza, John Ging, warns that "all agencies on the ground are trying to avert a disaster, but we are running out of time."
Even with Israel's partial relaxation of the blockade this week to allow the delivery of generator fuel and few other humanitarian supplies, the amount is not sufficient to meet the needs of the 1.5 million inhabitants of Gaza--particularly the sick, injured and vulnerable. Ensuring basic and fundamental rights for civilian women, men, and children is essential to the success of any peace process.
We ask Muslim students in North America to contact their congressmen and women or members of parliament (MP's) to request the immediate action of lifting the Israeli embargo on Gaza. To find your representative's contact information visit https://forms.house.gov/wyr/welcome.shtml; to find your MP's contact information visit http://canada.gc.ca/directories-repertoires/direct-eng.html.
