09/26/08 - MSA National Attends Malaria No More Event with Hamza Yusuf

MSA National was honored to accept an invitation by the Tony Blair Faith Foundation in partnership with Malaria No More to a Los Angeles event held on Thursday, September 25, 2008. The LA event marked the midway point the United Nations has set for acheiving the Millenium Development Goals (MDG's). A panel was held during the event which included the former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Sheikh Hamza Yusuf from the Zaytuna Institute, and Saleemah Abdul-Ghafur from Malaria No More.

MSA National Vice President Randa Kuziez was selected from the audience to ask a question of the panelists. Her question centered around asking about whether political instability was at the heart of the inability to eradicate preventable diseases like malaria throughout the world, which claims the lives of over a million people each year. Her question was answered by both Tony Blair and Hamza Yusuf and provided an excellent platform for panelists to discuss their differing views on what can be done to curb systemic problems in countries where malaria is rampant. Tony Blair commented that in the continent of Africa specifically, the long-term solutions must come from within Africa itslef, but that distributing bednets to poor families to protect children now would help save lives in the meantime. Sheikh Hamza Yusuf responded by implicating human greed at the core of most of the problems facing countries devestated by malaira and noted that cultivating the land and development would be the best way to curb the disease in the long range as malaria is primarily a disease of poverty.

Both MSA National Vice President Randa Kuziez and MSA National West Zone USA Respresentative Yasmin Elhady were invited to participate in the intimate 100-person audience, while thousands of internet users logged in to watch the live streaming video.
